This weeks Paper and Pens Day: How to tip a barista. Just leave some love man. Leave some love.
If you’ve ever wondered, this is what 6AM on a Friday looks like. At least that’s what it feels like.
By the way, Pernille, you know you’re a freakishly good painter when you manage to scare someone with a paper cup. In a good way though. Like when someone sneaks up on you and gives you a cupcake - That kind of scared.
‘Twas the evening before this one. On a quest for wisdom and wizardry, Simen the Brave, wielded his mighty Micron-pen. His blade, only 0.2mm thick, ran swiftly across his Moleskine canvas. The rough, textured scratchy-sound of pen against paper echoed through his bedroom. His sword of ink slowly bequeathing the conundrum at hand..
The imagination needs moodling - Long, inefficient, happy idling, dawdling, and puttering.
- Brenda Ueland
For those of you who, like us, haven’t heard of the word “moodling” before, it’s basically what the quote says: “To moodle is to engage in an act of divine laziness, that lovely inactivity that leads to moments of creativity and inspiration.”
And Mira Strøm Braaten did exactly that on this very cup.
Now you try it! Don’t think about what it “means”, or even the fact that it has to look nice. Just “engange in an act of divine laziness” and see what you end up with.
Unfortunately we don’t know her entire name, but Janine, aka. J9MCLOK on Instagram, tagged us in this photo. You know, just dropping some knowledge bombs on our casual Paper-and-Pens-Day.
Remember guys, we go hard on Instagram, so if you’ve made something vaguely relevant give us a shoutout using @mycupoftype or #mycupoftype OR even the shorter version #mcot, and we’ll get in contact. The possibilities are endless.
We’ll keep the family ball rolling with this cup by Mira Strøm Braaten. Bringing some harmony into our Alphabet series.
If you want to participate just grab a letter and start drawing. So far we’ve gotten to H, as you can see, and a little bird told us that the letter I, for impeccable innovation for example, is already in the making. As well as the letter K.
That means you can still do J, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, Z. All beautiful characters, that are all worthy of some sort of illustration. Except “U”, hate that letter..
For this week’s Paper-and-Pens-Day we got a family special for ya’ll! Kine Strøm Braaten and Simen Strøm Braaten combined their forces to create this treasure map, filled with coffee-related goodness.
If you’re new to this concept, Paper-and-Pens-Day is basically a chance to showcase your drawings, typography, and lettering on something besides a paper coffe cup.
So.. this happened. Exactly how it happened, we can’t say for sure, but we’re beginning to think that Pernille Horgen Bøe just isn’t from this world. That would make sense. Because, in theory, this shouldn’t be possible.
However! We’re extremely glad that she managed to pull off this amazing cup of art, and if you wanna check out some more of her work, which you should, feel free to click right aboooouuut spHERE!
Mehmehmeh, no, silly, over HERE of course, why would you even click on the word “Sphere”? Gosh..
Siri Lønvik with the intentional pun!
To all you English-speaking people out there - The word “Edderkopp” is Norwegian for spider, as you might have guessed. And the Norwegian word for cup, as in coffee cup, is “Kopp”.
The joke sort of loses all its funniness when you have to explain it, don’t it. But swear to God, it was hysterical to start with!
It’s Paper and Pens Day again, and Hallvar Hauge Johnsen chose to show some love to a couple of the local baristas in Svolvær (if you’re not Norwegian, we’ll buy you a coffee if you can pronounce that correctly).
“Warming up with what you’d find inside.”
Sean Tulgetske with the amazing lettering. Oh! And look at the lettering on the walls, holy shit! Haha, they kinda snuck up on us.

Let us take a second to ponder on the wonder of social media.
A couple of days ago Keet Veylupek tagged his photo on instagram with #mycupoftype, a couple of seconds later we’re all over it. Just like that! We don’t know this person, but by the almighty Kaldi and all his coffee-berry-eating-goats, he reached out to us none the less! Thank you, Keet. Thank you, Instagram. Thank you, interwebz!
Keet just so happens to be a talented photographer as well, so hop on over to http://keetphotography.tumblr.com/
